Women’s Gymnastics Leotards: Everything You Need to Know

Women’s Gymnastics Leotards: Everything You Need to Know

Gymnastics is a graceful physical sport that requires a lot of energy and effort. Other than strenuous practice, skill, and hard work, another thing that makes or breaks a gymnast’s performance is their leotards.

With how graceful these outfits are, there are a couple of things you can know about them. In this article, we will tell you some interesting facts about leotards - the outfit the monopolizes woman gymnasts’ wardrobe and the gymnast activewear market.

What Are Leotards?

Leotards were first introduced by Jules Leotard, a French Acrobat. He found the necessity of adding flexibility and breathability to men's activewear and hence in the 1920s, created a costume made of spandex.

This costume came to be known eponymously by the creator as Leotards. These one-piece garments are skin-tight and cover the entire torso from the shoulder to the crotch. All leotards are either sleeveless or have a short sleeve that cannot interrupt the gymnast's performance. However, sleeveless gymnastics leotards are generally preferred.

As woman's gymnastics started gaining prominence, leotards started shifting from men's activewear to the unisex market. Today, most of the leotards you will find will be exclusively for women since open back leotards, and girls gym leotards have become the need of the hour.

A longer, more elaborate version of leotards is called unitard. Unitards cover both the torso and the legs. They can be thought of as a jumpsuit but made of spandex or other stretchy, skin-fit fabrics.

What Are the Benefits of Wearing Leotards?

There is a reason why leotards have become so popular among gymnasts around the globe. Some of the prominent benefits of wearing leotards are:

  • Lightweight: Leotards are made of fabric such as spandex with is incredibly lightweight and breathable, allowing you the ease of movement.
  • Form-Fitting: Leotards are characteristically form-fitting. Therefore, they seem to be like a second skin to the gymnast, allowing them to be free in their movements.
  • Confidence Boosting: The form and shape of a leotard itself are such that it puts you into a mode to perform, allowing better performance.

Who Wears Leotards?

Leotards were initially created by men in acrobats. However, girls gym leotards are the new norm. In recent times, even though a leotard is considered a unisex garment, it is usually women who are visible wearing leotards.

Yong girls start wearing leotards when they are beginning their training as a gymnast. However, women wear an open back leotards, or any custom-made fit.

Men in acrobats still wear leotards. However, that trend is slowly becoming rare.

The Common Fabrics Leotards are Made of

Most leotards are generally made of spandex because the fabric is skin-fitting and allows maximum flexibility and breathability. However, other fabrics these outfits are made of are:

  • Polyester
  • Lycra
  • Velour
  • Velvet, Metallic Fabrics
  • Mesh

Some leotards can also be embellished with metallic jewels and rhinestones.

How Long Does It take to Design Professional Leotards?

If you are only starting out with gymnastics, you can find leotards in just about any size and pre-made form. However, if you are looking for leotards word by professional gymnasts such as the U.S. gymnastics team, one leotard can take up to two years to design and produce.

But why is that? Well, the reason for that is multifold:

  • Professional or custom leotards are supposed to be made specifically to the gymnast’s body size. For professional quality purposes, their measures are taken over a couple of weeks to check for any discrepancies.
  • Only the newest fabrics can be used to create professional leotards, and procuring them can be time-consuming.
  • Each leotard has to be tear-tested with specialized equipment to avoid any wardrobe malfunction.
  • Before the leotard reaches the professional gymnast, it has to be wash-tested.
  • Each leotard will have to go through multiple wear tests and check for flexibility and breathability.

All the above-given points might seem too much. However, if you are creating a leotard for someone who needs to wear it in the Olympics, nothing can be risked!

Summing Up

There is so much to gymnastics that the leotard might not get as much attention. However, considering how popular this activewear is, it is hard to believe how little people know about it!

While the props and practice play an important role in the gymnast's performance, it is also due to a well-crafted leotard that performance can be made or broken.

What Is the Difference Between a Leotard and a Singlet?

What Is the Difference Between a Leotard and a Singlet?

Leotard Vs Singlet

When it comes to the Olympics, gymnastics is one of the most popular sports among Americans, and it’s no wonder why.

Watching the way gymnasts’ bodies move, whether it’s on the floor, on the beams, or flying around the high bars, is enough to make you stare in awe. It truly is a sport that sucks you in.

To be able to do these moves safely and with ease, the gymnast’s clothing makes a huge difference — they can’t wear just anything.

That’s where a leotard and a singlet come in.

Leotards and singlets are the most common thing you see gymnasts wearing. They conform to the gymnast’s body and give them a full range of motion to perform their routines safely and successfully.

Though it may not look like it at first, there is a difference between a leotard and a singlet, and we’re here to make that differentiation clear. Read on to find out what that difference is.

Leotards

Named for its creator, a French acrobat named Jules Léotard, the gymnastics leotard was created to eliminate any restriction placed on his body during movement. He also had safety in mind, as well as the ability to show off his physique.

The leotard’s style was eventually adapted for trainers in other sports, such as ballet. No matter the sport, however, the purpose of the leotard remained the same — to allow the body to flex and move in various ways without any restriction.

From the leotard evolved the one-piece bathing suit, the catsuit, and even the singlet.

The main thing to focus on in gymnastics leotards is the cut of it. The leotard does not cover the legs at all. Think of it as a bikini bottom, where the fabric sits right at your hip.

The top of the leotard can show off different styles, such as short-sleeved or long-sleeved.

The backs can be cut differently, too, as there are some open back gymnastics leotards. These have become a really popular type of gymnastics leotard for girls. But the bottom of the leotard will always resemble a bikini bottom.

Singlets

This is where leotards and singlets differ — when focusing on the cut of the bottom of it.

While singlets still offer all the ease of movement and flexibility that a leotard offers, where they differ is that they provide more coverage.

Singlets are cut at the bottom in the shape of shorts, rather than being cut in the shape of a bikini like a leotard. The singlet was adapted from the leotard for wrestlers to wear, but gymnasts can wear it as well.

Which to Choose Between a Leotard and a Singlet

Gymnasts must wear either a leotard or a singlet in competition, so it’s up to you to choose which one feels more comfortable to you.

Leotards and singlets consist of the same materials and techniques, so they are very similar to one another. However, the one main difference between them is the cut of the bottom.

As long as there are no frills or straps dangling off that will get in your way, if you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, you’ll perform safely and execute your routine well.

Time to Shop

The only thing standing in your way of becoming the next Olympic gymnast is the outfit.

Wearing the right outfit is what will keep you safe and allow your body to flex and move the way it needs to. Between a leotard and a singlet, you can't go wrong — the choice is really is up to you.

What Do Gymnasts Wear? Gymnastics Leotard and Style Rules to Know

What Do Gymnasts Wear? Gymnastics Leotard and Style Rules to Know

What Do Gymnasts Wear? Gymnastics Leotard and Style Rules to Know

Gymnastics is a popular sport for women. But what do gymnasts wear? It's more complex than you think! Here are gymnastics attire and leotard rules to know.

Gymnastics is a sport that is wildly popular for girls and women. You get to strive for the peak level of strength, athleticism, and agility while exuding grace and beauty.

Nothing epitomizes those traits than the gymnast's outfit. But what do gymnasts wear?

The leotard is synonymous with the sport, and you need to learn how to wear it and what to look for.

Below we'll dive into some info on leotards and what you should know about a gymnast's attire as a whole.

What Do Gymnasts Wear?

The leotard is a one-piece suit that is skin tight. It covers the gymnast starting at the shoulders and around the crotch.

With that said, there's so much that goes into leotards and how they're worn. You'll want to have a good mix of training leotards and competition leotards. These tips explain what you should know to get started:

1. Make Sure Your Leotards are Completely "You" With the Volume Up

The leotard is the competition piece that showcases your personality. Like it or not, you're being judged by the officials the moment you step onto the competition floor before your routine even starts.

As such, you'll want to make a dynamite first impression by choosing a suit that is artful and vibrant. Aside from the fit of the outfit and what it must cover, you're allowed to decorate your leotard to your heart's content without any real rules or norms.

Play with some color schemes that fit your personality so that you can feel confident when you wear it.

2. Learn About What Gymnasts Don't Wear

Getting comfortable in a leotard could take some getting used to because gymnasts don't wear any underwear under them.

It's a competition foul to have your bra and underwear exposed, so most gymnasts get comfortable without them. The last thing you'd want is for your score to slip down even just a little in the medal chase, not due to your performance, but an avoidable loss of points.

Make sure that your leotard provides plenty of support. Girls and women have all different body types, so definitely prioritize leotards that fit snugly enough to work with your body, rather than against it.

3. Understand the Different Styles

There are a number of different gymnastics leotard styles you can shop for. Some examples of styles include tank leotards, camisoles, short sleeve, long sleeve, mock neck, and halter neck.

Each style decision boils down to what look suits you best, and what you feel most comfortable wearing. Get to know the different materials that these leotards are made with and make sure to purchase a quality brand that you can wear for several hours of practice.

Olympians like Gabby Douglas spent their entire teenage years training at a world-class level. They cut out everything except training and school.

Even competing at a varsity or college level requires the same type of commitment for however long a gymnast's career lasts. This boils down to a lot of training hours wearing a leotard.

When you have a good mix of leotards that you can count on, you'll be able to put away this concern and focus on getting better.

4. Take the Time to Get Your Measurements Properly

Gymnasts on the same team will all have widely different body types. It is virtually impossible to issue one size fits all singlets that actually accommodate a large group of athletes.

Instead, you should get your measurements well in advance to be sure that the leotard you wear fits your dimensions perfectly.

Some of the measurements that you'll need to get include the torso, bust, waist, and hip. You'll feel at your best competing when you get the right dimensions.

5. Be Sure That the Leotard is a Good Fit That Doesn't Draw Fouls

Gymnastics is a sport that is very open-ended in its expression, yet it is big on protocol and details. There are several fouls that can deduct points in competition based on the way the leotard fits alone.

Even removing a wedgie while competing can warrant a point deduction. Choosing the best fit for a leotard can save you some trouble in the long-run.

6. Don't Be Afraid to Spend a Little on a Quality Leotard

No matter what you're looking for from a leotard, be prepared to pay for quality.

On the highest level, Olympic women athletes wear leotards that cost $12,500 and took 2 years and three or more fittings to complete. They also have several of these outfits to wear throughout the entire Olympic games.

Even when competing in college and high school, it's not uncommon for an athlete to spend a few hundred dollars on a quality leotard. This is especially the case for leotards that feature a lot of personality and customization.

Pair your leotards with a great warmup outfit and you'll have a sense of pride every time you wear it. You should also put some thought into the slippers that you grab to go with it.

It takes fine attention to detail to choose the best leotard and wear it successfully.

The Story of a Great Gymnast, Katelyn Ohashi

The Story of a Great Gymnast, Katelyn Ohashi

Many recognize the name Katelyn Ohashi from her viral gymnastics routine video that scored a perfect ten back in 2019. The spunky video went viral and to this day, has over one hundred million views. In that video, Ohashi is light, fun, bubbly and seemingly all around happy. However, her road to this centered and joyful state was not an easy one. Katelyn confronted many battles along the way while keeping up the perception of perfection.

It is no secret that many athletes, among the rest of the population, put a lot of pressure on themselves, their performance, and their bodies. She received comments like, “you look like an elephant” or “you look like you ate a whole pig” from her coaches. These are the people who are supposed to life you up and help you grow. On top of the rampant cruelty from her coaches, her mother, while less blunt, still placed a lot of pressure on her to remain healthy and physically fit. All of this negativity took a toll on her mental and physical health.

It is incredibly important that parents and coaches alike take a note from Katelyn Ohashi’s story. The most important aspect of coaching should be supporting your student to grow, evolve and improve their sport through proper support and positive motivation. The concept of tough love is drying up and has been proven to not be useful. Parents need to remove a lot of the pressure they place on their athletic children to succeed. That pressure can be toxic and permanently damaging.

Provide your athlete with regular emotional check ins. Ask them how they are doing and if they are taking care of themselves by resting and nourishing their bodies. Make sure they know that perfection is unattainable, and they should enjoy performing in their sport above all else. They should know that as long as they are happy, they cannot disappoint those they love.

Being the best and competing at such a high level was taking Oashi’s life, happiness and experiences away from her. She decided to step down from her elite gymnast status and compete at the college level with the UCLA gymnastic team. Many could not understand her choice to demote herself by choice, especially her mother. But once her mother saw the light return to her daughter’s eyes and watched her daughter begin to heal from the years of abuse, she supported her daughter’s decision.

Now having battled her demons and on the other side of the darkness, Katelyn Ohashi says that everything is energy, and you can decide what affects you and what doesn’t. Now, she is able to perform at the highest level one can perform at, a level of true happiness and bliss, as seen in her viral gymnastics video. You can get you athlete to this level of happiness as well if you are kind, gentle, and supportive. Because when you’re happy and surrounded by people who are kind, loving, and supportive, you can never be less than a perfect ten.

How to Find the Best Gymnastics Leotards Online: Identifying Reliable Stores and Quality Leotards

There are many leotards online, but it can be difficult knowing what's the best gymnastics leotards and finding good stores. Here's how to buy leotards online.

Gymnastics is an amazing sport that mixes balance and strength with rhythm and agility. You'll need to look for the right athletic wear to get the most out of the sport.

Choosing the right leotard company is half the battle.

Read on so that you can learn more about finding the best gymnastics leotards on the market.

1. Consider the Styles That Suit Your Tastes

Style is everything when it comes to choosing a leotard. It expresses who you are as an athlete, along with your personality as a person.

The gymnastics sell you to the judges, but the style of the leotard puts the package together. Based on how important the leotard is, it shouldn't surprise you that Olympic women's leotards cost upwards of $1,200 each -- and they all get 8 different ones to choose between.

The outfits are custom made to their figures and feature 4,000 Swarovski crystals.

This doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune on a leotard, but do a little bit of research to find the retailers that have stylish options. Figure out which retailers high-level gymnastics competitors shop with and it will give you some promising leads.

2. Choose Based on Finding the Perfect Fit

It's easier to find the right company and leotard when you know your size and measurements. Different brands fit people differently, so knowing your bust, torso and other measurements will help you find the perfect fit.

Consider the fact that some brands might run a little big or small, and that they might also shrink in the washer or dryer.

3. Look Into the Materials They Make Their Leotards With

Gymnastic leotards are generally made with materials like nylon, polyester, velvet with spandex bland. Look for gymnastic leotards that are made with 4-way stretch fabric with a higher percentage of spandex, between 15-20%. The 4 way stretch fabric with a high percentage of spandex gives you freedom of movement. Also, look for the GSM (grams per square metre) in fabric. The higher the GSM number, the denser the fabric will be. For example, if the label reads 200-260 GSM, the leotard material would be thick enough not to be seen through, but also not too hot during the summer.

4. Shop Around For a Fair Price

You will definitely want to look into the prices that you find for leotards. If you're buying leotards for girls gymnastics, you can a new one for about $35, and could easily pay a few hundred depending on the brand.

Make sure to compare and contrast prices between different leotard sales companies and look for discounts and promotions.

5. Try Some On in Person Whenever Possible

You need to make certain that the leotard is the perfect fit, or as close to it as possible. The website that you shop with will usually have a sizing chart, but one of the best things you can do is try it on in person.

This is important since you'll need a leotard that fits you snugly during competition, without drawing fouls and penalties.

6. Figure Out the Best Leotard Brands For Gymnasts

It's also up to you to figure out which leotard brands suit you best. If you are a provisional gymnast, who trains dozens of hours a week, choose the training leotards that were designed with your comfort in mind. Look for brands that offer training leopards like GK or United All Around.

GK Elite and United All Around are brands for gymnastics, purists, and competitors of all levels.

United All Around offers a wide selection of sublimated leotards with crystal designs in 8 sizes. They use fabrics like nylon and tech mesh to create competition and training leotards that look great and last a long time.

Think about the important attributes you're looking for and use those criteria to buy a brand that fits.

7. Make Sure They Explain the Ways to Take Care of Your Leotards

Since you're going to be spending lots of time training and competing in a leotard, it's only right to take great care of it. This is important both for comfort and hygienic reasons.

The main key is to wash them in either warm water or cold water. Washing a leotard with hot water can easily shrink it to the point that it no longer fits. Turn garments inside out. Use a mild liquid detergent, rinse immediately.

Be sure that you find from the leotard company if there are any special requirements for taking care of their products. This is especially important if you get a leotard custom-made.

Be particularly mindful about things like crystals and other decorative features that could come out in the laundry.

8. Research the Store's Reputation and Return Policy

Finally, don't make a purchase unless you find out more about the shop's reputation. Even if a store has a large inventory of great leotards isn't worth it if their customer service is subpar.

Pay careful attention to an online store's story or mission statement. For instance, a company like United All Around has a powerful mission, in that the company started as parents wanting to support their daughter's competitive gymnastics activities.

After studying fashion trends and the sport as a whole, United All Around came up with a line of products that several young athletes rely on.

Studying their reputation in this manner lets you know what they're all about, and that you can trust them with your business. Further, make sure to always look up the return policy before making a purchase.

Does your child have dreams of becoming an Olympic athlete one day? Are you and your little one spending countless hours in the gym?

If so, then the importance of your child's gymnastics leotard shouldn't get overlooked. How your child looks and feels will make a huge difference in their progress.

Not sure how to get started? We've got you covered!

Read on to learn all about the top gymnastics leotard styles for 2020.

1. Tank Tops > Long Sleeve Leotards

If your young one loves gymnastics, then they likely fancy Simone Biles. Biles is the most decorated Olympic gymnast in history! She's idolized by young women everywhere, so it's no surprise that her leotard style is trendy.

Biles's leotard style is unique. She often wears flashy, colorful designs. She also made the tank top style look better than ever!

In the past, Olympians wore long sleeves for competition. The style's professional and gorgeous. After Biles, though, tank tops will likely become the next big thing in competitions.

2. Ombre Patterns

If you're no artist, then you've likely never heard of the term ombre before. I'm sure that you've seen it, though!

Ombre is a dramatic technique where a darker color fades into a lighter color. It can also work vice-versa. It's one of the most popular hairstyles in 2020, so it's no wonder that people want it on their clothes, too!

Ombre leotards are generally two shades, but more colors can get incorporated. Our ombre leotard features a beautiful transition from yellow to dark purple.

3. Sublimated Leotards

Sublimated leotards are another Biles-inspired trend. Not sure what sublimation is? Sublimation is a type of printing that uses ink and heat to transfer designs onto leotards.

Sublimation is trendy because:

  • You have more freedom with your designs
  • Designs won't fade or crack over time
  • They're durable and long-lasting

When it comes to leotards, sublimation is in! It will prevent your loved one's outfit from getting worn out. You'll also be able to keep those leotards as mementos because they won't degrade over time!

Imagine your little star in this stunning sublimated leotard!

4. Unique or Personalized Outfits

Long gone are the days when competition leotards all looked the same. You don't have to rock a U.S. flag design, nor do you need to fit into any type of box anymore.

Now, unique and personalized outfits are in!

Let your child be bold and be an individual. Not only will this help them stand out from other competitors, but it will also help them feel good, too!

Which Gymnastics Leotard is Right for Your Little Star?

A Guide to Leotard Sizes and How to Find the Proper Fit

A Guide to Leotard Sizes and How to Find the Proper Fit

A gymnastic leotard needs to not be too big nor too small. Learn how to find the right leotard sizes for your gymnasts and achieve the proper fit.

Is your child new to gymnastics? This probably means you’re buying a leotard for the first time!

A gymnastic leotard should fit perfectly so that it’s not too big or too small while your child is in motion.

Learn how to find the right leotard sizes for your gymnasts and achieve the proper fit!

Tips for Measurements

In order to truly get the size right, you’ll need to measure your child. The proper fit will also be affected by the type of material. How elastic is the leotard? What is the style and stretch? This will all affect the fit.

Below we’ll review how to measure each area in order to ensure you’re purchasing the right size. But first, there are some simple tips to follow.

Make sure your dancer or gymnast is not wearing undergarments or is not wearing a leotard with a bra. It’s important that the bust line has a typical shape so that you know you’re getting the measurements correct.

Also, have them stand up straight with their weight on both feet. When you are using measuring tape, you want it to fit but not be too tight. However, when doing vertical measurements, the tape should be taught.

Areas to Measure

You’ll need to start by getting the measurements for girth or torso. Place the tape measure at the top of your child’s shoulder, this should be where the leotard strap is sitting. Measure down through the crotch and back to the same shoulder. This is the most important measurement.

The next area is the bust, so you’ll want to measure over the fullest area of the best. Have the child relax their arms on both sides for a proper measurement.

Then, measure the child’s waist where it indents, and have them keep their finger in between the tape and belly.

For measuring the hips, make sure you’re putting the tape at the fullest part and have the child stand with their heels together.

Finally, get the measurement for the inseam from crotch to bottom. This will be measured in inches, but keep in mind that it’s to the nearest half-inch.

Additional Notes for Sizing

In order to guarantee you’re buying the right leotard size, it’s important to consider your child’s body style. If the dancer or gymnast is in between two sizes, you’ll likely want to choose the next size up.

Keep in mind that your child is still growing, so you don’t want them to easily grow out of the smaller size. You also want them to feel comfortable in the leotard.

Another note is that the style might affect how the leotard fits, so something like a racer-back leotard could offer more support.

Find the Right Leotard Sizes for Your Gymnasts

The key to finding the right leotard sizes for your gymnasts is measurements! Follow the tips above to guarantee you’re measuring correctly so that your child is comfortable and confident in their new leotard.

Gymnastics for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

Gymnastics for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

Gymnastics for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

Getting started with gymnastics doesn't have to be hard. Learn what you need to know to get started in this guide for beginners.

Gymnastics is a great way to build flexibility, improve coordination, boost self-esteem, and a great way to reap other benefits as well. Starting gymnastics is an exciting time but will require you to have some supplies and equipment.

Just like with any other sport or activity, you need to gather all essential items before beginning to ensure you can participate to the best of your abilities.

Once you have everything you need, you can start your gymnastic classes and practices! To get started, continue reading below. Here's our list of essential gymnastic equipment you'll want to have when starting out!

Training Leotards

In football, you wear shoulder pads, in soccer, you wear cleats, and in gymnastics, you wear leotards. Leotards are proper gymnastic attire because they allow a full range of flexibility. They won't constrict you in any way.

This is necessary if you want to practice and perfect different gymnastic moves. Don't limit yourself to only one, however. It's a good idea to purchase more than one to ensure you have enough for each practice.

The amount you should buy might depend on how often you practice throughout the week. You should also ensure you get the size just right. The waist, the hips, and the torso should all be measured to get a properly-sized leotard. The torso measurement is the most important, so be sure to take great care when taking these measurements.

If needed, you can ask a professional for help.

Gymnasts Shorts

Gymnastic shorts are another essential gymnastic clothing item. If you choose to wear shorts, you can slide them over your leotard. The shorts you choose should fit you well just like your leotard.

They shouldn't constrict you in any way and should be comfortable. Sizing is also important when choosing your gymnastic shorts because you don't want them to slip or slide out of place while practicing different leaps, flips, handsprings, and more.

Find a pair that you can wear throughout long practices without experiencing any sort of discomfort.

Hair Accessories

When you're constantly up in the air and doing all sorts of gymnastic moves, you won't want your hair to get in the way. If your hair were to fall into your face or eyes while trying to practice, it could cause you to fall or lose balance. This is why having hair accessories is so important.

Don't just have one or two either. Hair ties snap without warning all the time, and you don't want to get stuck without one. To prevent this, keep plenty of headbands, hair ties, and scrunchies on you at all times.

When your hair is kept up and out of the way, you won't have to constantly fight with it and can focus on perfecting your craft.

A Gymnastics Bag

Before you start collecting all of your necessary equipment, be sure you have something to put everything in. Some gyms sell gymnastic bags there, but you can purchase your own backpack or duffle bag. Either will work fine.

Just be sure the bag has enough room for all of your equipment and extra space as well. You want to bring this bag with you to each practice or competition. When you need something, you'll have everything you need right inside your bag.

Basic Gymnastic Skills

This might not be a piece of equipment, but it's still something you need to get you started. Some basic gymnastic moves would be a cartwheel, a forward roll and backward roll, a backbend, a handstand, and more. It's a great idea to begin practicing these basic moves before starting your classes.

If you don't have them mastered by the time your classes start, don't panic. That's why you signed up for beginner classes in the first place! It's nice to know a few things and what to expect before starting, though.

Keep in mind that good strength will be needed as well. Many gymnastic moves require you to support your own body weight. You'll want to get used to doing so to make it a bit easier when first starting out.

Your Grips

You'll want to pack two pairs of gymnast grips in your bag. A second pair is ideal so you can work on breaking in two pairs at once. When you need a backup, your second pair will be ready for use.

Make sure to pack a wire brush, sandpaper, and rubber bands with your grips as well. A wire brush and sandpaper are required to properly maintain the grips. You'll want to have them in your bag at all times.

Rubberbands are used to help keep gymnasts' fingers on their grips. They also work well to keep the velcro section of the grips on your wrists.

Adhesive Tape

Adhesive tape comes in handy when needing to wrap a wrist or ankle. Many gymnastic gyms keep the adhesive tape on hand, but it's convenient to have it in your bag as well.

When you need to wrap something up, you can quickly grab some out of your bag and be on your way.

A Change of Clothes

After an intense class or practice, you can almost guarantee you'll be covered in sweat. Gymnastics is no easy feat. It's quite a workout and takes a lot of effort and energy.

Keeping a change of clothes in your gymnastic bag is a great idea because you'll want to switch out of your sweaty clothes as soon as possible. After finishing practice and changing into some dry clothes, you can then apply lotion to your skin to prevent drying.

Do be sure to only do so after practice, however. Applying lotion before your gymnastic class could cause you to have slippery hands.

A First Aid Kit

A gymnastic first aid kit is an essential item to keep in your bag. As you try new moves and improve your skills, it's not uncommon to become injured here and there. Just like when trying any new activity, it might take a while to get the hang of it and some minor injuries might happen until you become more skilled.

It's just like riding a bike! When an injury does occur, reach into your first aid kit and remove your athletic tape, and other first-aid kit essentials to treat open wounds and other injuries.

Drinks and Snacks

Drinks and snacks should be kept in your bag at all times also. It's important to stay hydrated in order to perform to the best of your abilities. Keep a large refillable water bottle in your bag and be sure to start drinking lots of water the morning before practice and throughout the entire day.

If you drink all of your water, you can refill it at the gym. You can also pack some sports drinks in your bag as well. Choose ones that don't have high amounts of sugar.

Gymnastic practice can get tiring. This is why you'll also want a few healthy snacks in your bag to give you a boost of energy when needed. Make sure the snacks you choose are easy to grab on the go and can be digested easily.

Some great options are granola bars, energy bars, and trail mix.

Proper Organization

The first step is putting all of your equipment inside your gymnastic bag, but the second step is to maintain the organization. Proper organization will prevent you from having to clean out your bag after each class.

Give each item its own specific place in your bag. You can use plastic storage bags or something else to keep things separated if needed. You should also keep a list of everything inside your bag to prevent losing an item.

When you remove items from your bag at the gym, try your best to keep everything together. Then, check each item off your list when putting everything back. The last thing you want to do is lose something, run around looking for it, and have to purchase a new one.

Are You Prepared to Start Gymnastics?

From hair ties to leotards and so much more, these are all the essential gymnastic equipment!

Do you have everything you need to start your gymnastic classes and practices? If you don't have all the items on this list, then it's time to start shopping! Once you gather everything off this list, you can begin improving and perfecting your gymnastic skills.

10 Incredible Benefits of Gymnastics for Kids

10 Incredible Benefits of Gymnastics for Kids

Gymnastics is becoming an increasingly popular sport, with children as young as three years old becoming involved. In fact, this is actually the ideal age to get into the hobby!

Gymnastics for kids is a sport often overlooked in favor of soccer or other more popular activities, but it's severely underrated.

Gymnastics is not just a way to ensure your child is living an active lifestyle, but it can teach them many skills that are crucial to know when they become an adolescent and even an adult.

If you've been considering encouraging your child to participate in an extra-curricular activity they'll be passionate about, you won't regret choosing gymnastics. These are all the reasons why, and the many benefits they'll experience.

1. It Helps With Coordination

Gymnastics is all about balance and coordination. When interacting with other kids and the environment around them, children can be naturally clumsy and lack some spacial awareness.

Although this is normal, it's not always healthy. Kids are more susceptible to injuries than adults, which means it's wise to take great care in ensuring they're keeping themselves safe.

Encouraging them to participate in gymnastics means you don't have to be a helicopter parent. You can equip them with the skills to take care of themselves and interact with their environment in a way that's safe.

2. Gymnastics for Kids Helps With Social Skills

One crucial benefit of seeking out gymnastics classes for kids is the social aspect that comes from it.

Being part of a community or club and working together to encourage each other can be highly beneficial at a very young age. Children often struggle to work out their social skills, and some move more slowly than others which can result in conflict with their peers.

One way to ensure they're keeping up is by enrolling them in a gymnastics club for kids. By giving them social interaction on a weekly basis, you're moving them at a faster pace than many other children their age — in the best way possible.

3. It Can Teach Important Sportsmanship

Children often don't have good control over their emotions. Losing a game seems like the worse thing in the world, and many kids are 'sore losers'. Usually, they grow out of this, but it takes some time.

The competitions associated with gymnastics are usually held in good fun and good spirits. Even those who don't come out on top are reassured and praised for having tried their best and achieved something, meaning it's a good place to learn how to lose.

It's also essential to teach your child to be gracious towards those who beat them, because they won't always win. Gymnastics is a wonderful place to do this.

4. It Can Help With Discipline and Perseverance

The lack of good emotional regulation present in a child means that if they fail at something, they'll often want to give up right away. It's natural for young people to grow frustrated fast and think that if they aren't immediately good at something, practicing simply isn't worth it.

The often-slow but natural and steady progression that comes with gymnastics will teach them how to persevere.

This is a quality that will become important in later life, since adults can't just give up on whatever they aren't immediately good at. The ability to take things slowly and improve with determination will open the door to other skills, and gymnastics is a fantastic way to initially teach this to kids.

5. It's a Confidence-Booster

Childhood and adolescence are hard. Surrounded by peers and pressure, it can often make a child feel as if they aren't good enough, or other people are better than them. In fact, 7 in 10 adolescent girls believe they don't measure up to others in some way.

Boys are, unfortunately, not immune to this feeling either.

By becoming good at gymnastics and developing a skill they can be proud of, their confidence will be boosted. Performing in front of others and receiving praise and encouragement can assure them that their work has paid off and they are most definitely talented in some way.

Even if they do end up experiencing a hard time at any point, gymnastics will always be there for them. Although it's amazing to start your child off early, that doesn't mean they have to quit when they grow up!

6. It Builds Strength

Gymnastics moves for kids are specifically designed for their young age, which means they can start building strength. The moves they're taught will help them slowly build their skills and become more impressive as they grow.

It's important to be strong — it can make you feel empowered, and even protect you in unwanted situations.

Very few kids want to lift weights or participate in exercise more appropriate for adults, and it's not okay to force them to do so. The best way to have a strong child is to encourage them to engage in age-appropriate exercise and strength-building, and gymnastics may just be the best way of doing that.

7. It Encourages a Healthy Lifestyle

Gymnastics also encourages children to build and hold a healthy lifestyle.

Since the willpower of children can often be nonexistent, it's important for parents to make sure their diet is balanced and they're getting enough fresh air and exercise. The latter can come from gymnastics.

If they keep up this hobby into their adolescent and adult life, they'll have something they can always return to that will stop them from falling into a lifestyle that's too sedentary.

It's an easy trap for anyone to fall into, but gymnastics for kids is a great preventative measure.

8. It Encourages Commitment

A gymnastics club for kids isn't as serious as many commitments they'll make as an adult, but it can help prepare children for them.

The moves that gymnastics entails don't come easily or right away. Commitment is one of the main things it helps with, and addressing such a lifelong topic long before someone has grown up can go a long way.

Many adults struggle with commitment issues. By gently encouraging them in early life to commit to smaller things, they might grow up to have a much healthier relationship with commitment.

People often associate commitment issues with love and romance, but they can manifest in any area and they can be detrimental. It's in your child's best interests to make sure they don't struggle with this.

9. It Can Help Your Child Overcome Fears

Many children have anxiety about joining a gymnastics club for kids or attending classes, and it's important to listen to the reasons why. Do they have real, genuine reasons for disliking this sport and are more suited to another one? Or is it the fear of performance and socializing that's holding them back?

Once you've weighed the reasons they might be struggling, you can decide whether to encourage them to push through or not.

It might be best to abandon the idea and find something else — or it might be better that you explain all the benefits and ask them to give it a shot.

Children who were initially opposed to gymnastics but end up enjoying it have faced and conquered a fear. This shows them that they can do it again in later life.

Everyone comes up against fears in life, and equipping your child with the skills needed to overcome them can be invaluable.

10. Above All Else, It's Fun!

It's important to teach your child the value of hard work and commitment. But, above all else, it's important they have fun in life too.

Childhood should be about enjoyment. For many children, developing this skill, performing, and being with their peers will provide some of their best memories. More often than not, children who are encouraged to participate end up having the time of their lives.

Gymnastics for Kids Can Be Beneficial in So Many Ways

Gymnastics for kids is incredibly beneficial in some obvious ways. They can develop social skills and build their strength in an environment that's both safe and fun.

Not only that, but there are some more subtle benefits too. The life skills that can be learned from gymnastics are some that you may never have thought of before. Perseverance, resilience, and commitment are important qualities that can be real assets when learned in early life.

With this hobby, your child will emerge into adolescence well-equipped for the world they're about to encounter!
